(A New Way of Thinking about Corona: Markus Gabriel and Michael Sandel)

A New Way of Thinking about Corona: Markus Gabriel and Michael Sandel

I spend most of my day working on my PC, so when I have free time or get bored, I tend to watch YouTube. I watch Otani’s activities and Sui-channel, a video that makes me think about the marine environment in terms of the regeneration of seaweed beds.

Today, I chanced upon a video of Markus Gabriel and Michael Sandel, a philosopher famous for his white-hot classrooms.

Markus Gabriel said that the corona was nature’s brake on humanity’s rapid expansion. I am very sorry to those who have been directly affected by this, but I was struck by this.

From the time I was born in 1966, Japan entered a period of rapid economic growth, and in the 1960s and 1970s, pollution such as Minamata disease and air pollution occurred mainly in industrial areas. In a certain sense, this was also a brake from nature. I myself suffered from childhood asthma for a time.

Japan has entered an era of low growth, but the world is moving to make things a little more convenient, a little more efficient, and a little more profitable, while destroying more and more of nature under an ever-growing economy. Nature may have put the brakes on such a world with the corona.

Markus Gabriel said that the future of capitalism will be “ethical capitalism. Wealth is not about making money, but about having the potential to do good. And that is what Marx Gabriel is talking about.

Michael Sandel said, “A corona pandemic is like an X-ray. For a moment, I didn’t know what he meant, but it seems to mean that the social inequities that existed before Corona became visible with Corona.

“In the midst of the pandemic, financial markets were very strong, and the wealthy reaped most of the benefits of the global economy. But the real wages and living standards of many ordinary workers have not increased much.

It is true that the price of goods has gone up, especially in Japan, but I have not heard of any increase in salaries.

Has the value of labor declined? Professor Sandel, citing a speech by Dr. Luther King, says that the value of workers has not changed. He says that workers should have dignity for their work, while those with power (politicians and the wealthy) should be humble.

Maybe I’ve been going too fast.  The Corona caused me to stop and think about many things, and I thought about people in vulnerable positions, so I think there are times when we need to stop.

It is true that coronaviruses are microorganisms and do not think about whether they are rich or poor. It is clear to me that such a human approach is meaningless in the face of a pandemic. The people who are fighting on the front lines of coronas are the medical personnel who are responding to coronas. The other day, I listened to a lecture by a nurse at Okayama University, and it was clear to me that they are doing a truly wonderful job. Professor Sandel said that everyone in the society should have a sense of gratitude towards the workers.

Professor Markus Gabriel said that being born in Germany in the 20th century was the best thing that could have happened to him. I, too, am glad to have been born in 20th century Japan. I also hope that we can create a society where today’s children will be grateful to have been born in the 21st century.
